Il Texas Hold'em (o semplicemente "hold'em" in breve) è attualmente la variante più popolare del poker, grazie principalmente alla copertura televisiva delle World Series of Poker, del World Poker Tour e di vari eventi basati sulle celebrità. ♣Gioco della mano
Ad ogni giocatore vengono distribuite due carte scoperte (o coperte) che solo loro possono vedere. Si verifica un giro di puntate. Tre carte comuni (note come "flop") vengono distribuite scoperte al centro del tavolo. Si verifica un altro giro di puntate. ♣Rango delle mani

Ad esempio, una coppia di assi e sette batte una coppia di re e regine. Se due o più giocatori hanno la stessa doppia coppia, allora il kicker della quinta carta determina il vincitore.
Tre di un tipo: Il tris (tre carte dello stesso valore) batte la doppia coppia. Tre assi è il migliore di questi. Se due o più giocatori condividono la stessa mano di tris, i due kicker rimanenti determinano il vincitore.
Dritto: Una scala batte un tris. Una scala è composta da cinque valori consecutivi di carte. Gli assi possono essere alti o bassi, quindi la scala più bassa va dall'asso al cinque mentre la più alta va dal dieci all'asso. Non ci sono kicker con scale poiché tutte e cinque le carte sono necessarie per fare la mano.

♣Variazioni delle scommesse
Il Texas Hold'em può essere giocato in tre varianti di base:
Limit Hold'em: Nel Limit Hold'em, l'importo che puoi puntare o rilanciare è fisso, in base alle puntate postate. Nei giochi Pot Limit e No Limit, la puntata minima o il rilancio è uguale al big blind (vedi sotto). Una volta che un giocatore rilancia, il rilancio minimo è pari all'ultimo rilancio. Il minimo viene reimpostato sul controbuio al successivo giro di puntate.
♣Blinds e il pulsante
In una partita casalinga, i giocatori distribuiscono a turno le carte, ruotando in senso orario. Nei casinò e nei giochi online che utilizzano un mazziere dedicato, il bottone del mazziere (o semplicemente il "bottone") è un disco bianco che viene fatto ruotare in senso orario tra i giocatori. Il giocatore che è "sul bottone" è l'ultimo ad agire in ogni giro di puntate, dopo il flop.
Nel Texas Hold'em, ci sono scommesse forzate chiamate "ciechi" fatte prima della distribuzione delle carte coperte. Questi bui sono simili agli ante tranne per il fatto che coinvolgono solo due giocatori e le puntate non vanno immediatamente nel piatto. Il giocatore alla sinistra del bottone punta lo "small blind" e il giocatore successivo punta il "big blind". Lo small blind è in genere la metà del big blind e il big blind è la puntata minima o il rilancio che può essere effettuato in questo e in tutti i round successivi. Nel Limit Hold'em il big blind è uguale alla "small bet". Nei tornei, i bui vengono alzati a intervalli prestabiliti, o livelli. Ciò mantiene l'azione in corso e pone un punto finale definito al gioco. Altrimenti, i giocatori potrebbero semplicemente continuare a passare le mani e il gioco andrebbe avanti per ore o giorni.
Una volta che i due bui sono stati piazzati, il giocatore alla sinistra del big blind è il "primo ad agire" e ha la possibilità di foldare, chiamare la puntata del big blind o rilanciare. Il gioco continua fino al bottone. Quindi il giocatore che ha puntato lo small blind ha la possibilità di chiamare o rilanciare le puntate fino a quel momento. E lo stesso vale per il giocatore che ha piazzato il big blind. Se nessuno ha rilanciato il big blind allora quel giocatore ha la possibilità di "fare check" e il flop verrà distribuito. Non ci sono più puntate forzate dopo il flop e la prima persona alla sinistra del bottone (che non ha ancora foldato) sarà la prima ad agire nei successivi giri di puntate.
♣Pentole laterali
Un side pot viene creato quando un giocatore chiama una puntata ma non ha abbastanza fiches per coprire la puntata o se un giocatore rilancia quando un altro giocatore è già all-in. Il piatto principale conterrà solo le fiches a cui ogni giocatore ha contribuito equamente. Le puntate overflow vanno nel piatto laterale, a cui il giocatore all-in non ha contribuito e quindi non può vincere. Possono esserci più piatti secondari se ci sono più giocatori all-in. L'ultimo side pot creato è il primo side pot assegnato dopo lo showdown. Il piatto principale viene assegnato per ultimo. I giocatori che foldano prima dello showdown perdono il diritto a tutti i piatti, compreso il piatto principale.
